Federal Minister for Climate Change Zahid Hamid on Monday held a meeting with United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN–Habitat) country head Bella Evidents Country and applauded the efforts of her organisation for sustainable urbanisation in the country.
The UN-Habitat is the United Nations agency mandated by the General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
Its engagement in Pakistan is in the areas of housing, community infrastructure, basic services, urban development, disaster risk management/early recovery land and property, and Geographic Information Management. The implementation approach is primarily “community-led” development, people’s process approach in which affected populations takes charge of their recovery, rehabilitation and development.
The UN-Habitat country head briefed the minister about the progress on development projects of UN-Habitat in Pakistan and said the state of Pakistan cities was progressing rapidly for implementation.
“The UN-Habitat teams will go in different provinces and meet focal persons,” she said.
The minister informed her about the recent developments taken on climate change front.
He highlighted that a climate change council and authority would soon be established under the newly-passed Climate Change Act.
