‘LGs to be made independent’

Chief Minister Pervez Khattak said on Tuesday that the local governments would be strengthened and made independent of any interference.

Speaking at a meeting on local government sector at the Chief Minister Secretariat here, he directed formulation of a comprehensive plan to define actual power, authority and responsibilities of the local government system so that targets could be achieved.

The meeting debated initiatives taken for strengthening the local governments.

Mr Khattak said the government was bound to ensure transparent utilisation of public money so fruits of development could reach people. He directed that resources needed to be spent according to the aspirations of people.

The chief minister ordered the relevant officers to conduct field visits to monitor implementation process on different development schemes. He also ordered preparation of a plan to help strengthen the district finance and planning unit.

The CM agreed to a proposal for formation of internal government devolution support committee, saying budgetary releases and schedules should be streamlined.

He sought a summary for introduction of internal audit mechanism at the lowest tiers of governance.
