MANSEHRA: Traders here have questioned the authority of chairman of steering committee of the district council on price control to pay surprise visits and impose fines on them on the charges of profiteering and selling substandard food items.
The reaction came after the committee chairman, Shahid Humayun Khan, visited bazaars in Khaki and fined shopkeepers for overcharging and selling substandard items.
The traders met with deputy commissioner Iqbal Hussain in his office and apprised him of the situation and challenged the authority of the committee chairman to impose fines on them.
Claim chairman of steering committee not authorised to impose fines
Mr Hussain assured the traders of resolution of the issue, saying that under the Local Government Act 2013 the chairman of steering committee on price control couldn’t impose fines. He said that the chairman could take up such issues with the government department concerned for action.
“Under the local government law the chairman of any steering committee like health, price control, education can only take up issues falling in their domain with the respective departments, , but can’t take action directly,” said Mr Hussain.
He said that as for as the case of price control steering committee was concerned the chairman could take up the issue with the district food controller or price control magistrate.
When contacted, Shahid Humayun said that as chairman of the district council’s committee it was his responsibility to check price hike and sale of substandard items. “I acted according to the law as officials of food department accompanied me during the raid,” he said.
