Ministry, NGOs to join hands for climate action

The Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC) is planning to enter into an agreement with a coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) named Civil Society Coalition for Climate Change (CSCCC) soon.

Apparently the purpose of this memorandum of understanding (MOU) is to cooperate on sustainable climate actions, ecosystem protection, community wellbeing, natural resources management and environmental conservation as integral components of social and economic development in Pakistan.

“The MoCC has made many such failed attempts in the past by constituting different committees of think-tanks which comprised so-called civil society members and NGOS aiming to coordinate national and international efforts to create an enabling environment for the promotion of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures,” a former MoCC official told The Express Tribune on the condition of anonymity.

He reminisced that ministry had notified a similar steering committee that was aimed to coordinate national and international efforts to create an enabling environment for promotion of climate compatible energy back in March 2016. “Those past experiences proved nothing but merely talks, meetings and press statements,” he lamented, adding that ministry would facilitate CSCCC members in securing visas for travelling out of the country on the pretext of international conferences and seminars to oblige some selected people as climate change and technical experts.

The MOCC Deputy Director Media and Communication Saleem Shaikh said that the objective of this cooperative relationship would be to contribute substantially, on a continuing basis, to sustainable and effective climate actions, ecosystem protection, community well-being, natural resources management and environmental conservation as integral components of social and economic development in Pakistan.
